MIDI Settings

Selecting the Midi Settings menu item or the MIDI icon on the toolbar results in the following dialog box.

Input and Output Devices

Set these to reflect the hardware you are using. Normally there will only be one input device which relates to an external MIDI source such as a MIDI keyboard. There may be a number of output devices relating to both the computer’s soundcard and external MIDI equipment. If you are unsure which to select: a) consult your soundcard’s instruction manual or b) experiment to see which gives the best results!

Note that it is possible to use an external MIDI keyboard as input device and the internal soundcard as an output device.

Midi Thru Channel

This has the following options:

None: MIDI messages received via the MIDI in port are not relayed to the output source.

All: MIDI messages received via the MIDI in port are relayed to the output source on the same channel.

Channels 1-16: MIDI messages received via the MIDI in port are relayed to the output source on the channel specified regardless of input channel.

Note. If you are using an external midi keyboard or sound module you are advised to set its LOCAL setting to off if you are using PET’s MIDI Thru option.

Output

Allows you to specify the output channel, velocity and instrument of PET’s tests.

Channel: MIDI channels 1 to 16 are available

Velocity: Controls the volume to the output on a scale of 0 (off) to 127 (maximum).

Instrument: Supports MIDI patch changes numbered from 1 to 128. General MIDI patch names are shown.

Metronome

Allows you to specify the output channel, velocity and instrument of PET’s metronome.

Channel: MIDI channels 1 to 16 are available. Note that channel 10 (the default) is normally reserved for drum and percussion sounds.

Velocity: Controls the volume to the output on a scale of 0 (off) to 127 (maximum).

Instrument: Supports the General MIDI drum kit.

Transposition

This allows PET to work as a transposing instrument. This is useful for:

Common Settings
+12 Up an Octave
-12 Down an Octave
-2 Bb Instruments. Eg. Trumpet, Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet
+3 Eb Instruments. Eg. Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone

If Transpose Midi Thru is selected messages received at the MIDI in port are changed before they are sent to the MIDI out port. If you are using an external MIDI keyboard as both an input and output device you must ensure that its LOCAL setting is set to off.
